Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! I don’t know about you guys, but nothing says holidays to me like a murder mystery. Luckily, Rian Johnson’s Knives Out comes out today, and even luckier, there were a few preview screenings last weekend so Casie and I already got to see it and find our inspiration for this Knives Out treat. What do donuts have to do with a murder mystery? I’d try to explain, but I don’t think I could do justice to the explanation given by renowned private detective Benoit Blanc in film, so I’ll just say you’ve gotta see this one to understand. And you should! The movie is an absolute blast and I can’t wait to see it again.

This was our first time making fried donuts, and you know what? It wasn’t too hard. We followed this Delish recipe for a simple, vanilla-glazed donut. For the knives, just melt about 2 cups of semi-sweet chocolate chips in the microwave in 30 second increments until just melted (if almost completely melted, microwave again for 10-15 seconds). Transfer chocolate to a piping bag, then pipe the blades of the knife (blades only), transfer to the fridge to cool, then color the blades with some silver or gray edible luster dust. Pipe on the handles, back to the fridge, and when your donuts are done, just top them with enough knives to make them feel like edible decor in an eccentric murder mystery author’s home.

We also decided to have some fun with the donut holes. In one scene in the film, Chris Evan’s character, Ransom, is seen eating Biscoff cookies. So we made Biscoff cookie donuts holes by taking about ten cookies, transfering them to plastic bag and crushing with a rolling pin or other heavy instrument. Put your cookie crumbs in a bowl next to your vanilla glaze. Dunk your donut holes in the glaze, drain for a few seconds using a fork, then transfer to the cookie crumb bowl and coat. These were extra yummy and I’d even recommend topping some of the whole donuts with the cookie crumbs if you want to get crazy.
