Earlier this month, Sugared Nerd Contributor Casie & I covered A Simple Favor for our podcast Movie Matchup (listen to it, paired with Gone Girl for the theme Hell Hath No Fury, right here!) In each episode we recommend some themed foods to go along with the movies, and A Simple Favor has no dearth of options. Anna Kendrick’s character, Stephanie is a Mommy Vlogger who is regularly cooking and sharing recipes. But it felt wrong to make something that didn’t represent the other leading lady, Blake Lively’s Emily.

So, martinis it is! And what better to pair a martini with than a little something to soothe you after an over-indulgent evening (or afternoon, no judgement). Now, this martini recipe is lifted straight from the movie, and I do want to warn people: this is not for martini novices. Traditionally a martini is shaken or stirred with ice, both to chill the drink and to slightly water it down. So don’t go for this unless you’re prepared for a drink that really packs a wallop.

The hangover smoothie is also based pretty closely on what we see in the movie; since Stephanie prepares to make this for her vlog, I was able to examine the screen to see exactly what ingredients might be included. Now, this was probably just set dressing, so I was prepared to alter the ingredients if anything seemed off, but with a little tinkering I actually ended up with something pretty tasty.

Real Martini

  • frozen gin

  • dry vermouth

  • lemon

In a frozen martini glass, pour just a splash or vermouth. Swirl the glass, toss the vermouth out, then fill the glass with your frozen gin. Carefully cut a large twist of lemon peel from the lemon. Squeeze, peel side out, over the gin, rub the peel around the rim of the glass, then drop into the glass.

Hangover Smoothie

  • 1 frozen banana

  • 1/4 cup frozen blueberries

  • 2 handfuls of fresh spinach

  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds

  • 2 tablespoons greek yogurt

  • 1 tsp coconut oil

  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon

  • 1 tablespoon honey (or to taste)

  • 1 cup milk

Combine all ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth. Enjoy!
